Last week we put a question on Facebook. What did your grandparents have that you can’t find anywhere now? And then a thousand and forty-six of you answered.
Most of the answers ran more nostalgia than catalog. Sunday dinners. Front porch evenings. Neighbors who knew your name. The smell of your grandma’s basement. We get it. None of that is on a listing platform.
But the specific things you named — those we clocked. The canning jars. The wood cook stove with the oven on top. The pedal-powered grindstone someone’s grandfather sat on out in the garage. The manual flip-top toaster the de Marco family had on their counter. The zither nobody plays anymore. The roller-and-wringer washing machine.
Those are the things we hunt for in this newsletter. When one surfaces at a Michigan estate sale this week, we point you at it.
Two of you somehow both reached for Mohawk Limburger cheese — the eight-ounce jars. We read the comment twice to make sure we’d heard it right. We can’t help you find one. The brand is gone. But we wanted you to know we saw it.

Kellie’s was the lone real classified in our debut paper, six weeks ago. Our scouts read these galleries six ways sharper now than they did then. We pointed at Kellie’s that first week because they were the only sale on the map. We’re pointing at them this week because of what’s actually inside the listing.
What our scouts flagged
A Cybis porcelain magnolia sculpture — hand-painted, c. 1950s–60s, A-condition. Cybis is the American limited-edition porcelain house from Trenton, New Jersey; their hand-painted florals don’t show up at Michigan estate sales every week. There’s also a Lladró Angel of Peace figurine, model #6131 — Spanish porcelain, the model number puts the year of production within a known band. Both are the kind of pieces hunters drive across the state for.
Quieter finds in the same gallery: a mint-green Hamilton Beach mixer (c. 1950s), a hand-turned wooden lidded jar, a Persian-style round rug, a mid-century modern wood desk, and what reads on the photo as a crystal decanter set in cut diamond pattern.
If you collect porcelain, the Cybis is the doorknock. If you collect mid-century kitchen, the Hamilton Beach mixer is.
