Finders Weekly

Wednesday’s paper. Thursday’s doors.

Wednesday, May 6, 2026 · Michigan Bureau

Editor’s Note

Morning.

Three sales we’d set the alarm for this Thursday morning, two online auctions worth your bid window, and one find from a 624-photo gallery our engine wouldn’t have let us miss.

One thing changed since Issue 1.5: we’re now scraping eight Michigan bureaus on a schedule, every Sunday at 10pm. The engine runs without our hands. The picks come from real data, not memory.

And one more — we’re cleaning up the operator side. findersweekly.com/operators is now live with an open letter to Michigan estate sale operators. If you run sales, basic listing in the paper is free, always. Forward it to one operator who’d find it useful.

Editor’s Pick of the Week

In-Person / Online Estate Sale · Monroe

Monroe, MI · 48162 · Kat’s Findz Estate Sales

Fri May 8 · 6a–5p  ·  Sat May 9  ·  Sun May 10 · through 5p

Hybrid sale — the listing opens online at 6 AM Friday, then the doors at the residence open the same morning. 352 photos in the gallery. Operator has a track record running clean estate sales out of Monroe.

★ Watch for

Fenton glass, sterling silver, coins and currency, albums, mid-century modern furniture, Victorian pieces, lighting, Murano glass, jewelry, vintage clothing, cast iron, tools, Barbie collectibles. Operator describes the sale as a wide-mix estate — the kind where the curbside finds run rich early Friday.

♦ MCM Watch

Mid-century modern at Michigan estate sales this week

Three of this week’s in-person sales list mid-century modern pieces. The Monroe sale (Kat’s Findz, Fri-Sun) is the deepest — explicitly tagged Mid-Century Modern + Victorian + lighting. Livonia (Caring Transitions) and the Northville online auction round out the mix. If you’re hunting MCM teak or rosewood in Michigan this weekend, two of those three are within an hour of Detroit.

♦ Garage Find

Family-run sales without the operator polish — where the curbside finds run rich

Two family-run estate sales this week, no operator listed: the Warren three-day (Thu-Sat) and the Sturgis weekend (already wrapped May 2). Family-run = the brother-in-law set the prices, not a professional liquidator. That cuts both ways — deals on the items the family doesn’t recognize, premium pricing on what they think Aunt Karen’s china is worth. Watch for: the boxed-up basement stuff, the items behind the items, the photos labeled “misc.”

Most readers will scroll past this auction.

Clinton Township · Coughlin’s Auctions · closes Wed May 13

The listing description is six words long. The photo gallery is 624 images deep. That ratio is exactly the kind of mismatch our engine flags — the descriptions don’t do the inventory justice, and the casual scroller bounces by photo twenty.

Worth a careful read. The bid window stays open through Wednesday next week, ships available, so this isn’t a Thursday-morning rush job. Coffee, ten minutes, scroll the back half of the gallery — the photos that aren’t styled, the ones with the price tag still attached. That’s where the diamonds live.

We don’t run the gavel. We just told you where to be when it drops.

The Tally

One artifact a week. What we saw, where it cleared.

The Sturgis personal-residence sale (May 1-2, family-run) hung an “ALL SALES FINAL · YOU HAUL” sign on the front porch. The cedar chest, the ornate desks, the church organ in the den — gone by Saturday afternoon. Family ran their own pricing. The line started at 8:55 AM Friday for a 9 AM open.

The Tally section runs every issue. Reader sightings welcome — reply to this email with what you found and where, and we’ll print it next week with credit.

Reply to this email and tell us one thing you’d like to find at an estate sale — a specific dining table, a maker you collect, a piece of vintage Pyrex, an old typewriter for a kid’s first apartment. Specific helps. We’ll watch every Wednesday’s listings across all eight Michigan bureaus and tell you the morning of when we spot a match.

You don’t need to be a serious collector. Casual once-a-month browsers are why the Want Ads section exists.

No fee. No promotion. No data-mining. Want Ads have run in newspapers as long as paid classifieds have, and we’re not changing the format that worked.

Weather

What’s trending at the sales this week, and one tip from the road.

Trending up: mid-century modern (three sales). Online auctions stacking up — Northville and Coughlin’s both running 388 and 624 photos respectively, with bid windows open through next Wednesday. Trending quiet: west-side Michigan — Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo each pulled zero estate sale listings this week. We’ll keep watching.

Tip from the road: The Monroe sale opens at 6 AM Friday for online bidding, doors open same morning. The line at the curb starts forming around 5:45. If you’re going, bring a flashlight — first hour is dark, and the early lots are in the basement.
